European Papermaking with Dr. Joran Proot

European Papermaking with Dr. Joran Proot

Join us for a special lecture and papermaking workshop with guest historian Dr. Joran Proot! Dr. Proot is a distinguished historian of early modern books from the Cultura Fonds and the University of Antwerp. During the lecture, Dr. Proot will discuss the materials and workflow of paper making as it was carried out in Europe during the early modern period. After the lecture participants will learn to make paper, using the classic Western or European style technique. Participants will pull, couch, and press beautiful handmade sheets—an incredibly satisfying process whether you’re brand new to papermaking or an expert. Dr. Proot will connect the practice of papermaking to the history and morphology of hand-made paper in this program. All skill levels welcome and all materials provided. The paper made during the program will be available for pick-up/shipping after drying.

This program is collaboratively hosted by Emory University and the Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking.
